Context
1 out of 4 westerners may develop a mental issue during their lifetimes. In many of these cases, escalation towards severe mental illness can be prevented by a greater awareness and basic care of your own mental health.
Result
Hoofdzaken helps find meaning, mindfulness and improving the overall mental health state of its users.
By tracking emotions in relation to their context, Hoofdzaken gives people visual insight in which moments matter most. Allowing them to set goals and motivating the user to complete them. They can help others through the integrated community “meedenkers”.

The Proces of Hoofdzaken
Information Architecture
The biggest challenge was to show quick insights in the complex data set of captured moments and all it's different relations in a way that's insightful but not overwhelming.
Structuring the user flows on paper, a-lot-of-flows...
Prioritising printed out screens with stakeholders.
Measuring emotions & context
For Hoofdzaken to give insights, users first need to give enough input for accurate analysis. Asking users to indicate their emotions, personal context and activities at random intervals during the day.
This is based on a technique called 'Experience Sampling Method', or ESM. Showing how you experience the quality of your daily life in relation to purpose, emotions, mindfulness & personal context.
Looking at different ways of getting user input, through interactions.
Communicating with researchers on capturing data in a user friendly way.
Testing interaction patterns through lo-fidelity prototypes.
User Onboarding & gradual engagement
Hoofdzaken requires 50 moments to be captured before giving insights into the user’s mental state. This meant about 2 weeks before they could gain insights.
Collaborating with in house illustrator for Empty states
Guiding users attention & guidance to parts of the app which were immediately usable
Giving clarity on progress for when it was usable.
Iterating on copy
Development
After we mapped all screens and flows, we teamed up with Label A to develop the app in sprints.
